Melissa Jefferson-Wooden won the Prefontaine Classic women's 100m in 10.78. Sha'Carri Richardson was second in 10.79. Adaejah Hodge was third in 10.80. The top three were separated by 0.02 seconds in a race that had been coming all season. For the first time, we are getting both Melissa Jefferson-Wooden and Sha'Carri Richardson at their best in the same race. That hasn't been true before. Richardson's ascent from 2021 through her 2023 world title happened while MJW was still building. Jefferson-Wooden's emergence as the world number one across 2024 and 2025 came while Richardson was struggling — 2025 in particular was a difficult year for her. They've raced. They've been on relays together. They train under the same coach. But we haven't seen both of them at their sharpest at the same start line until Eugene. Now we have. In this video, we break down what Pre Classic told us about the state of the rivalry heading into the rest of 2026 and toward the 2027 World Championships. Georgia freshman Adaejah Hodge did her best to put Ja’Kobe Tharp’s historic hurdles race out of viewers minds today on Day 2 of the NCAA NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. In the 100m, Hodge shattered Sha’Carri Richardson’s collegiate record with a 10.63 clocking, becoming the fifth-fastest woman ever in the process. A few hours later, she scorched the track again, leading all 200m qualifiers in 21.96, equalling the fastest single-day double in history.
In the 10,000m final, Iowa Stare freshman Mercyline Kirwa pulled off an incredible upset over Pamela Kosgei and Jane Hedengren, closing in 61.84 to win the NCAA title for the Cyclones. Hedengren, who finished third, will race again in Saturday’s 5000m final.
The women’s 800m prelims featured the fastest rounds we’ve ever seen, with 1:59.93 being required just to make the final. All of the 1500m favorites qualified, setting up the final we’ve all been waiting for. Akala Garrett, Aaliyah McCormick and Dejanea Oakley all posted fast qualifying times ahead of Saturday’s finals.
In the field, Amanda Moll established a new collegiate record in the outdoor pole vault at 4.84m, while Axelina Johansson (Shot put) and Alyssa Jones (Long jump) both notched championship records on their way to a title. Ben Barton (Decathlon), Elisabet Rut Runarsdottir (Hammer), and McKyla Van der Westhuizen (Javelin) all earned wins as well.

The Athletics Integrity Unit has disclosed that NCAA 200m champion Adaejah Hodge 🇻🇬 of Georgia received a two-year ban for testing positive for a prohibited substance, but her sentence was shortened by seven months after she provided substantial assistance to anti-doping investigators. Hodge tested positive for metabolites of GW501516 at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Lima in August 2024. She was notified of the violation in November 2024 and immediately cooperated with investigators. Her former Montverde Academy teammate Issam Asinga tested positive for GW1516 in August 2023. He is currently serving a four-year ban that ends in Aug. 2027. Former Montverde Academy coach Gerald Phiri was suspended after the AIU alleged he possessed multiple banned drugs and three of his high school athletes tested positive for GW1516. From the AIU decision: – The AIU agreed on balance of probabilities that ingestion was unknowing – The ban runs from August 28, 2024 to August 27, 2026 – However, seven months were suspended for substantial assistance, making Hodge eligible to compete again as of January 28, 2026 – All competitive results between August 28 and November 22, 2024 were disqualified. The case was resolved via a negotiated agreement between Hodge, the Athletics Integrity Unit and WADA, leaving no avenue for further appeal. "I always define the impossible as possible. Nothing is impossible to me. I always put my mind to do impossible things."
Montverde Academy rising senior Adaejah Hodge shook the track and field world when she won the New Balance Nationals Indoor 200m title in 22.33 seconds. The performance broke the previous record of 22.97 by Bianca Knight, which stood since 2007.
Hodge also qualified for the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary later this summer, where she will represent the British Virgin Islands. She holds the BVI national records in the outdoor 100m (11.11s) and indoor 200m (22.33s).
On Memorial Day weekend, we paid a visit to Clermont, Florida to witness her work on her powerful start and smooth stride alongside coach Gerald Phiri.
The 17-year-old has tremendous potential to become one of the best sprinters in the world. Her work ethic and her personality are unmatched for someone her age.
Hodge is entered in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x200m relay and 4x400m relay and sprint medley relay at New Balance Nationals Outdoor from June 15-18 in Philadelphia. You will be able to watch all of the action LIVE and for FREE on the New Balance YouTube channel.
