Jacob Kiplimo Just Broke the Half Marathon World Record — Again

    CITIUS MAG

Jacob Kiplimo returned to Lisbon on Sunday and reclaimed his place in the record books, running 57:20 at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon to set a new half marathon world record. Kiplimo's 57:20 takes 10 seconds off Yomif Kejelcha's official world record of 57:30, set in Valencia in 2024. Kiplimo himself had held the previous record at 57:31, also set in Lisbon, in 2021. With no pacemakers, Kiplimo ran the first 10km in 27:00 alongside Kenyan duo Nicholas Kipkorir and Gilbert Kiprotich. At 15km, sensing the pace had dipped, Kiplimo surged — covering the next 5km in 13:31 and never looking back. Kipkorir finished second in 58:08, with Kiprotich third in 58:59. Kiplimo had actually run 56:42 in Barcelona last year, which is a jaw-dropping time that would have shattered the record by over a minute but it could not be ratified because the race conditions didn't fully comply with World Athletics rules. Sunday's mark is official. This Week In Track & Field: LA Marathon Epic Finish By Nathan Martin — But More Lead Car Controversy; Jacob Kiplimo Breaks Half Marathon WR + Fred Kerley Banned Two Years

    March 10, 2026

This week, Chris Chavez, Mac Fleet, and Kyle Merber break down the biggest highlights from the LA Marathon, Jacob Kiplimo’s new half marathon world record, Fred Kerley’s suspension, the most anticipated events at the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend, and lots more.

    Discussed in today’s episode:

    - Nathan Martin closed out a heroic final sprint and big negative split to win the LA Marathon in 2:11:18, just 0.18 seconds ahead of runner-up Michael Kamau. He split 66:18-65:00 to reel in Kamau.

    - Jacob Kiplimo returned to the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon (the same course where he first made history in 2021) and broke the half marathon world record again with a 57:20 victory. He took 10 seconds off the previous record held by Yomif Kejelcha (57:30).

    - The AIU announced 2x Olympic medalist and 2022 World champion Fred Kerley received a two-year ban for whereabouts failures, sidelining him through August 2027. Results from Dec. 6, 2024 – Aug. 12, 2025 have been disqualified.

    - The most anticipated distance events at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend.

Kiplimo’s 57:20 Half Marathon, Kipchoge’s Next Race, LA Marathon Controversies & NYC Lottery Odds | The Running Story

    March 9, 2026

This week on The Running Story, Michael Doyle and Jessy Carveth break down the five biggest stories shaping the running world.

First up: Jacob Kiplimo runs 57:20 at the Lisbon Half Marathon, potentially reclaiming the half marathon world record pending ratification after last year’s controversy over pacing vehicles.

Next, Eliud Kipchoge announces he’ll run the Cape Town Marathon, marking the first time the marathon legend will race on African soil in a marathon — and possibly positioning him to become the first eight-star finisher if Cape Town becomes a World Marathon Major.

We also dive into two major LA Marathon controversies:

    • A stunning 0.01-second finish after the race leader was misdirected off course near the finish

    • A heated debate after runners who took a heat-relief shortcut at mile 18 were still awarded finisher medals.

Finally, the NYC Marathon lottery results are out — and the odds are tougher than ever, with around 1% of applicants accepted.

Why World Athletics Denied Jacob Kiplimo’s 56:42 Half Marathon World Record

    CITIUS MAG

According to a report from Runner’s World Spain, 🇺🇬Jacob Kiplimo’s 56:42 half marathon world record set at last year’s Barcelona Half Marathon will NOT be ratified by World Athletics. For months, there’s been speculation over whether Kiplimo was aided by his proximity to the lead pace car. World Athletics has not set any rule for the distance a race vehicle must be positioned relative to the leading athlete. However, Kiplimo was estimated to be 10 to 20 meters behind the vehicle that displayed the race clock all throughout the race. Kiplimo’s performance took 48 seconds off 🇪🇹 Yomif Kejelcha’s previous world record. Kejelcha’s 57:30 from the 2024 Valencia Half Marathon will remain the world record recognized by World Athletics. The 2026 Barcelona Half Marathon is on February 15th. Kiplimo is currently preparing for the London Marathon in April. Kejelcha is set to make his marathon debut there. On Monday, World Athletics ratified three world records, but Kiplimo’s half marathon was not among them.
