Small Island, Big Dreams: Julien Alfred On Channeling Grief Into Greatness, Stepping Away to Reset & Embracing Her Race-Day Alter Ego

July 28, 2026

This week on Hurdle, Emily sits down with Olympic and Indoor World Champion Julien Alfred. The track and field star opens up about navigating the mental ups and downs of elite competition, moving away from home at age 14 to pursue her dreams, and learning how to protect her inner peace amid massive international success and public attention. Julien shares how she overcomes self-doubt, handles the pressure of representing Saint Lucia on the global stage, and why giving herself grace has been key to her growth both on and off the track.

IN THIS EPISODE

Navigating Mental Rough Patches: Julien reflects on starting the season in a difficult mental space, questioning her abilities, and how stepping back helped her reset and realign.
Overcoming Loss & Finding Drive: How losing her father at a young age shaped her resilience and continues to inspire her athletic journey today.
Handling High Pressure: What it’s like to carry the expectations of an entire country while learning to focus on her own personal growth and goals first.
Protecting Inner Peace: Why Julien steps away from social media and media noise to surround herself with a strong support system that values her for who she is, not just what she accomplishes on the track.
The Move at Age 14: The immense sacrifice of leaving Saint Lucia as a teenager for Jamaica to train, and how that leap of faith prepared her for college and professional success.
Game Face vs. Real Life: The contrast between Julien’s calm, peaceful personality off the track and her focused, "all business" alter ego on race day.

QUOTABLE MOMENTS

"I am just such a resilient person, a strong person, that if I'm down for a short time, I know I'm going to find my way to get back to the top."
"It's okay to give yourself grace. It's okay to mess up sometimes. That's part of being human."
"Small island, big things—you can just do whatever you put your mind to, no matter where you're from."
"On the track, I'm a different person. It's all business... There's nothing to smile about until I cross that line first."

Amy Hunt On London Diamond League 200m And Racing At Home

CITIUS MAG

Amy Hunt is one of the world's best 200m runners heading into her Diamond League home meet, and Saturday's field at the Novuna London Athletics Meet is the most stacked she'll race outside of a global championship. Julien Alfred ran 21.51 in Monaco last week — the third-fastest 200m in history. Gabby Thomas has broken 21.90 in her last four races, most recently 21.83 in Budapest on Tuesday. Hunt, who took World Championship silver in the 200m in Tokyo last September behind Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, is racing at home against arguably the strongest women's 200m field of 2026.

Monaco Diamond League: Emmanuel Wanyonyi 1000 world record, Julien Alfred 21.51, Kebinatshipi 43.34

LetsRun

Monaco delivered. Emmanuel Wanyonyi shattered Noah Ngeny's nearly 27-year-old 1000m world record with a stunning 2:11.83, closing in a blistering 13.1-second final 100 meters. Agnes Ngetich nearly took down the suspect Chinese 3000m world record in her track opener, running 8:08, while Faith Kipyegon's puzzling injury-plagued season continued with a fourth-place finish. Julien Alfred ran 21.51 in the women's 200m — the third-fastest ever — to destroy a field where even third-place Gabby Thomas ran faster than any previous race in history. Collen Kebinatshipi moved to number six all-time in the 400m with 43.44, setting up a must-watch showdown with Samuel Ogazi later that night at the Ed Murphey Classic. 🎁 🎧 Get this as a podcast with a super soft running shirt — https://www.letsrun.com/subscribe Timestamps 0:00 Monaco Diamond League Recap and Highlights 3:01 Wanyonyi's 1000m World Record Breakdown 6:31 1000m All-Time List and Wanyonyi's Kick 9:06 Wanyonyi's Road to the 800m World Record 12:15 Pacing Lights Debate and World Record Integrity 17:19 Women's 3000m: Ngetich's Brave World Record Attempt 22:41 Faith Kipyegon's Struggles: Time to Worry? 28:58 Should Kipyegon Shut It Down for the Season? 30:54 Men's Steeplechase: Kenya's Drought Finally Ends 34:06 Men's 5000m: Graham Blanks Nearly Wins Diamond League 36:35 Blanks' Finishing Tactics and the Rail Debate 43:50 Isaac Kimeli's Mysterious Decline 46:43 Julien Alfred's Stunning 21.51 in the Women's 200m 51:34 Alfred vs Jefferson: Who Wins Fully Healthy? 55:31 Seville's 100m, Russell's Hurdles, and Kebinatshipi's 400m 1:00:45 Ed Murphy Classic Preview: Ogazi vs Wilson at 400m 1:03:22 Rapid Fire: World Cup, Women's 400m, and Wrap-Up CONTACT Email: podcast@letsrun.com Call or text: 1-844-LETSRUN (1-844-538-7786) ABOUT THE LETSRUN.COM PODCAST Since 2000, LetsRun.com has been the independent home of elite running.
