In this episode of The Marathon Running Podcast, I sit down with U.S. Olympian and elite distance runner Dakotah Popehn fresh off her second-place American finish at the Chicago Marathon.
We dive deep into the real-time dynamics of race day, from managing 60-degree heat and hamstring nerve impingement at mile 21 to working dynamically with her Puma teammate and pacer, Rory Linkletter. Dakotah breaks down the exact mental grounding techniques she uses when a race gets dark, sharing how staying in the present moment gets her through the hardest miles.
I also share my own Chicago Marathon recap from the course, breaking down what it was like to navigate unseasonably warm weather, the massive spectator energy, and the mechanics of handling hydration at speed. Plus, we explore Chicago’s major sustainability push on course—examining the shift toward cupless refill stations with Culligan and HydraPak, the reality of cup-handling dynamics at high volumes, and how major marathons are tackling waste reduction.
Beyond the roads, Dakotah gives us an inside look at her upcoming memoir, You Think This Hurts. We talk candidly about her journey through early-life adversity, family divorce, and how running became a way to choose her own pain to process life’s uncontrollable challenges. Plus, she shares her perspective on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games and what lies ahead for her training.

Rory Linkletter (2:06 marathoner) discusses fueling specifics, everything he has learned throughout his career, and the importance of staying flexible based on conditions. We also covered speed development, including workouts at 2:15/km pace and faster, whether the Boston Marathon can be quicker than Valencia when the wind is favourable, the relationship between Conner Mantz and Ed Eyestone, coaching Truett Hanes, and much more.

The conversation shifts to speed and power output as a limiter for marathon performance, citing examples like Kejelcha, Sawe, and U.S. runners. Rory explains why he sprints and strides twice weekly, often using track in-and-outs or hill strides, and why he values maintaining top-end speed.
He also describes building confidence to go out fast using fitness data, including sub-60 half marathons, and gives his views on Boston's comparability to flat courses and Ryan Hall's windy 2:04. Rory also answers rapid-fire questions on training partners, running with his dog, possible Valencia plans tied to 2028 qualifying, double-threshold readiness, and his new coaching role with YouTuber Truett Hanes.

“I tangoed way too much in the first half and didn’t have enough left to do it again when it counted. The marathoner who dances smart wins. I danced too early.” My guest for today’s episode is Rory Linkletter: a Canadian Olympian, co-host of the Out and Back Podcast, and one of the most analytically sharp pro voices in the sport right now. At the 2026 Boston Marathon, he ran 2:06:04 for 14th place overall and the second-fastest marathon in Canadian history. He came in with the best build of his career — two sub-60-minute halves, workouts that never said no — and went out with the lead pack convinced that anything was possible. Then the bill came due. In this conversation, Rory walks us through the moment the race turned, the internal negotiation of the final nine miles, the hamstring that seized on Boylston, and what he took from watching Clayton Young and Ryan Ford fly past him on Commonwealth Avenue. But we also get Rory in full pundit mode: how to actually read the Boston results in the context of 2028, why he thinks Zouhair Talbi was operating on a different level than everyone around him, his declaration that John Korir is the best in the world right now, his take on the Scott Fauble super shoe debate, the Emma Bates sponsorship controversy, and why he thinks the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials will be the craziest in modern history. He also previews Ottawa in five weeks, where he goes in with a simple mandate: run less with the heart, more with the head. We have a brand new show joining the Sandy Boy Productions podcast network, and I am so excited about it!
It’s called Out and Back, hosted by professional runners Rory Linkletter and Jacob Thomson. They train in Flagstaff, they are chasing big goals on the roads, and they bring you straight into the behind the scenes of the marathon lifestyle. This show is training talk with a few detours, and it is exactly the kind of perspective I love adding to the network.
What I love about Rory and Jacob is how curious they are. They are not here for surface level conversations. They want the real details. The stuff you actually want to know if you care about performance, training, racing, and the mental side of showing up when it matters. If you are someone chasing a BQ, an OTQ, or you just want to understand how the pros think about the marathon, you are going to love this podcast.
In this intro episode, I sit down with Rory and Jacob to talk about why they started Out and Back, what they want the show to be, and why they think there has been a gap in marathon specific podcasting. We also get into what it looks like to promote yourself as a professional runner, how they balance training with content, and what success looks like for both of them as they head toward Boston.
I cannot wait for you to hear more from these two, and I am really proud to welcome Out and Back to the Sandy Boy Productions family. Please take one minute right now, go hit subscribe wherever you listen, and then send this to a friend who loves marathon training talk.
