The two-hour marathon barrier is gone. At the 2026 London Marathon, Sebastian Sawe became the first person ever to run under two hours on a record-eligible course — and Yomif Kejelcha did it too, in his marathon debut.

Outside columnist and Endure author Alex Hutchinson joins Michael Doyle, Alex Cyr and Katelyn Tocci to make sense of it.

    We get into:

    • Why Hutchinson thinks the shoes (the Adidas Adios Pro Evo 3) are still the biggest single factor — and why Nike has lost its grip on the super-shoe race
    • Sawe's astonishing negative split: 60:29 out, 59:01 back, with a final 5K that put him on 1:52 marathon pace
    • Whether the marathon is even the same race anymore — and whether "marathon pace" as a training concept is dying
    • Norwegian-style threshold blocks vs. classic long marathon-pace work
    • Resilience and durability — what they are and how (or whether) you train them
    • Bicarb / sodium bicarbonate: the science of why it works, and whether marathoners should bother
    • Why drafting "like a zombie" might be the most underrated tactic in distance running
    • What's actually possible from here: 1:57? 1:56? Are we further from our potential than we think?
    • The recreational-runner takeaways: shoes, fuel, sleep, and what to skip

A wide-ranging, occasionally contrarian conversation about an inflection point that may reshape the sport for the next decade.

EMERGENCY PODCAST | Sabastian Sawe Runs 1:59:30 Marathon World Record In London

    CITIUS MAG

In an emergency episode of the CITIUS MAG Podcast, Chris Chavez and Preet Majithia react to one of the most historic moments in distance running: Sabastian Sawe becoming the first athlete to officially break two hours in the marathon in a record-eligible race, running 1:59:30 at the London Marathon. They break down how it happened: highlighting the blistering negative split, the late-race surge, and the role of Yomif Kejelcha pushing the pace in his debut. The conversation explores every factor behind the performance: race tactics, depth of field, super shoe innovation, fueling, weather, and the psychological barrier finally falling. What does this mean for the future of the marathon? How repeatable is sub-2? And how do we process this? Jacob Kiplimo Just Broke the Half Marathon World Record — Again

    CITIUS MAG

Jacob Kiplimo returned to Lisbon on Sunday and reclaimed his place in the record books, running 57:20 at the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon to set a new half marathon world record. Kiplimo's 57:20 takes 10 seconds off Yomif Kejelcha's official world record of 57:30, set in Valencia in 2024. Kiplimo himself had held the previous record at 57:31, also set in Lisbon, in 2021. With no pacemakers, Kiplimo ran the first 10km in 27:00 alongside Kenyan duo Nicholas Kipkorir and Gilbert Kiprotich. At 15km, sensing the pace had dipped, Kiplimo surged — covering the next 5km in 13:31 and never looking back. Kipkorir finished second in 58:08, with Kiprotich third in 58:59. Kiplimo had actually run 56:42 in Barcelona last year, which is a jaw-dropping time that would have shattered the record by over a minute but it could not be ratified because the race conditions didn't fully comply with World Athletics rules. Sunday's mark is official. This Week In Track & Field: LA Marathon Epic Finish By Nathan Martin — But More Lead Car Controversy; Jacob Kiplimo Breaks Half Marathon WR + Fred Kerley Banned Two Years

    March 10, 2026

This week, Chris Chavez, Mac Fleet, and Kyle Merber break down the biggest highlights from the LA Marathon, Jacob Kiplimo’s new half marathon world record, Fred Kerley’s suspension, the most anticipated events at the NCAA Indoor Championships this weekend, and lots more.

    Discussed in today’s episode:

    - Nathan Martin closed out a heroic final sprint and big negative split to win the LA Marathon in 2:11:18, just 0.18 seconds ahead of runner-up Michael Kamau. He split 66:18-65:00 to reel in Kamau.

    - Jacob Kiplimo returned to the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon (the same course where he first made history in 2021) and broke the half marathon world record again with a 57:20 victory. He took 10 seconds off the previous record held by Yomif Kejelcha (57:30).

    - The AIU announced 2x Olympic medalist and 2022 World champion Fred Kerley received a two-year ban for whereabouts failures, sidelining him through August 2027. Results from Dec. 6, 2024 – Aug. 12, 2025 have been disqualified.

    - The most anticipated distance events at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend.

    • Kerr is undefeated at Millrose over longer distances, but 0-3 in the Wanamaker Mile—will that change?

    • Miller is targeting Donavan Brazier’s WR (1:13.77) after a strong 800m opener.

Yared Nuguse On Returning To Defend His Wanamaker Mile Title At 2024 Millrose Games, World Record Possibility

    December 18, 2023

"It feels like a goal that’s within my grasp of achieving. Not only am I stronger and smarter than I was last year, but I feel like I've come a long way and will be able to attack this race with a lot more confidence to chase the world record. When I went (to Millrose) for the first time, I was just chasing the American record. So I feel like changing that mindset, just seeing how far I've come, it feels like a very real possibility at this point."

U.S. outdoor mile record holder Yared Nuguse will return to the Armory Track and Field Center in New York City for the 116th Millrose Games to defend his men’s Wanamaker Mile title.

Last year, Nuguse made his Millrose Games debut and won and set a U.S. indoor mile record of 3:47.38. He barely missed the world record of 3:47.01 set by Yomif Kejelcha in 2019.

Nuguse put together a career year in 2023 with a 7:28.23 for 3000m indoors (American record); a personal best of 3:29.02 for 1500m (the fastest performance by an American-born runner); 3:43.97 outdoor mile (an American record and the fourth-fastest performance in history; a victory at the London Diamond League 1500m and a fifth place finish in the 1500m final at the World Championships. Most recently, he ran 3:56.58 at the Merrie Mile in Honolulu to come just .45 seconds shy of breaking the road mile world record.

The Millrose Games is the sixth stop on the 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold calendar.

Livestream and television broadcast details will be announced in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more Millrose Games athlete announcements as the pro fields come together.

Rob Napolitano On Pacing Yomif Kejelcha to a 3:48.46 Mile, Making Money As A Pro Runner

    February 18, 2019
Rob Napolitano joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast after pacing Yomif Kejelcha at the Millrose Games to a 3:48.46 mile. Kejelcha fell 0.008 seconds short of breaking the 3:48.45 record set by Hicham El Guerrouj in 1997 in Ghent, Belgium. Napolitano was tasked with going through 440 yards in 56, 880 yards in 1:53 and 1,000 meters in 2:20. After about 800 meters, Kejelcha took over and ran the rest of the race on his own. We dive into those four laps of work by Rob and what the 24 hours were like that led up to an important pacing job. We also dive into how he became a professional runner with the New Jersey-New York Track Club and making the most out of an opportunity presented by coach Frank Gagliano. The conversation also hits on life as a rookie runner in Europe and how professionals try to make money in those races. It's a fun an interesting conversation that you'll enjoy. --------- Kemoy Campbell Recovery GoFundMe: https://www.gofundme.com/67e5h-kemoy-campbell-support-fund?member=1678178
