Run with me in the Brooks Hyperion Max 3. Even though I was excited for the Peba layer in this shoe (DNA Gold), I had a lot of doubts when it came to this shoe. The plastic plate looked chunky, the shoe was weirdly tall, and it was overall a lot heavier than it looked. But the ride of this shoe was surprisingly nice. The DNA Gold layer is noticeable in such a good way. The step in comfort is better than I could reasonably expect for a Hyperion. And the shoe can move despite the weight.
There’s two shoes that this reminds me of. It’s kind of like a faster Forever Run 2. It’s kind of stiff but still fun. It’s got a similar pillow pad around the back of the heel with knit material curling over into a pull tab.
It’s also like a better version of an old Zoom Fly. Big and chunky but still kind of fast somehow. But this is so much better than the Zoom Fly versions 3-5.
I took this shoe for an easy run with some strides. At easy paces, some of the heft of the shoe was noticeable but the DNA Gold kept things nicely chill. At speed, a lot of the heavy feeling went away although never quite completely.
I could see a lot of people using this as a long run shoe or as a first marathon option.
