Are you struggling with your running performance and wondering how to increase your pain tolerance? The answer might be closer than you think: it’s all about getting enough sleep! 😴
Studies have shown that lack of sleep can impair pain tolerance and increase sensitivity to pain. This means that if you’re not getting enough shut-eye, your body might perceive running as more painful than it actually is, making it harder to push through the discomfort.
But how much sleep do you really need to boost your pain tolerance and performance? The National Sleep Foundation recommends 7-9 hours of sleep per night for adults and 8-10 hours for 14-17 year olds, but individual needs may vary. To find your optimal sleep duration, pay attention to your body and how you feel after different amounts of sleep.
If you’re having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, try adopting a relaxing bedtime routine, such as taking a warm bath, reading a book, or meditating. Avoid screens for at least an hour before bedtime, as the blue light can suppress the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep. Avoid caffeine consumption at least 6 hours before bedtime. Avoid a harder workout at least 3 hours before bed time. Wear socks to bed. Make sure you are eating enough carbohydrates throughout the day, as carbohydrate-induced increases in blood glucose increases the uptake of tryptophan by the brain, increasing the synthesis of melatonin and serotonin, facilitating sleep. Alcohol and some medications may keep you overall less in deep restorative sleep. As always, talk to your qualified healthcare provider before making lifestyle and dietary changes.
In addition to improving pain tolerance, sleep also plays a crucial role in muscle recovery and growth, as well as overall health and well-being. So, prioritize sleep as much as you prioritize your training, and watch your running performance soar!
